Public Housing
In the southern Iowa counties of Mahaska, Keokuk, Washington, Lucas, Monroe, Wapello, Jefferson, Wayne, Appanoose, Davis, and Van Buren, public housing is administered by the Area XV Multi-County Housing Agency. Area XV provides affordable rental units to eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

Public Housing Through Area XV
- These units are available to income eligible families. The rent for these units are calculated based on 30% of the family’s adjusted gross income. Unit size is assigned based on family composition.
- A criminal background check will be done on family members age 18 and older.
- The family will be notified when their name reaches the top of the waiting list for the town they have requested.
- The family will complete required paperwork and provide information about family composition, income, and assets; as well as any current and/or past landlords.
- The family will need to provide copies of photo IDs, social security cards and birth certificates for all family members.
